Pond leak detection and repair

Most "leaks" aren't holes in the liner. They're low edges, a waterfall splashing out, or a cracked fitting. Finding the real cause first saves you from tearing the pond apart.

Signs it's time

  • You're topping off more than an inch or so a week (outside of hot, dry spells)
  • Wet, soggy ground or mulch near the pond or waterfall
  • The water drops to the same level every time and then stops
  • Visible tears, sagging liner or rocks sliding into the pond

What the visit usually involves

  • Running the pond with the pump off, then on, to narrow down where the water goes
  • Checking edges, the waterfall and stream for low spots and splash-out
  • Inspecting the skimmer, filter box and plumbing connections
  • Patching liner tears or resealing waterfall foam and edges
  • Talking through liner replacement if the old liner is past saving

Every pond and every pro is a little different. The pond professional you're matched with will explain their own process and price before any work starts.

Have this ready when you call

  • How much water you lose per day or week
  • Whether the level stops dropping at a certain point
  • Whether the loss changes with the waterfall on or off
  • Liner type and age, if you know it

Questions

How can I tell evaporation from a leak?

On hot, windy summer days a pond can lose a surprising amount to evaporation and waterfall splash. If the loss is steady in mild weather, or the level always stops at the same spot, a leak is more likely.

Can a pond liner be patched?

Many EPDM and similar liners can be patched if the damage is small and the liner is still flexible. Very old or brittle liners are harder to repair. The pro will tell you what makes sense after seeing it.
